Here is a really cool map of the U.S. Interstate system.

Looks like a sort of arterial map, ‘ey?  The nodes of the system are at major cities or centers of commerce.  Notice how the Northeast has the most federal highways?  Also, Texas has a highway triangle at the heart of the State; Chicago and Detroit radiate into the Midwest; the western nodes are few in number and far apart; and the South is a number of approximatyely equal nodes that wrap around the southern Appalachian mountains.
